Get started with Backup Storage
Backup Storage gives you an account for files and backup repositories. You can connect from a computer, VPS or home server using SFTP, SCP, rsync, Borg, rclone, restic or a git-annex rsync remote.
Start in Storage β Backup Storage. Open the Storage section in the portal sidebar to order or manage an account.
Order an accountβ
- Create an SSH key on the computer that will connect.
- Choose Order backup storage.
- Enter an account name, select the location and choose your capacity.
- Paste the public SSH key into Public keys, one key per line.
- Review the monthly charge and transfer allowance, accept the terms and select Create invoice.
- Pay the invoice using an available payment method in Billing.
- Return to Storage β Backup Storage β Manage storage. Wait for the account to become Active.
Storage starts at 100 GB for $0.60/month. Add capacity in 100 GB increments at $6 per TB/month. A 100 GB account includes 300 GB of combined upload and download transfer per UTC calendar month. One TB means 1,000 GB.
Connect and upload a test fileβ
Open the account's Connection panel and follow Find your connection details. Use the assigned host and port, username storage, your private key and the remote path /data.
Choose a starting guide:
| Tool | Best starting point |
|---|---|
| FileZilla, WinSCP or SFTP terminal | Browse, upload and download files |
| SCP | Copy individual files or folders |
| rsync | Repeatable directory transfers |
| Borg | Create and restore Borg archives |
| rclone | Configure an SFTP remote |
| restic | Create and restore a restic repository |
| git-annex | Store annexed file content |
Upload a small file, download it to a different local name and open it. Once that works, configure your regular job. Each tool uses the same storage account and shares its capacity and transfer allowance.
Back up a Cloud App automaticallyβ
Use the appβs Backup tab to send encrypted full backups to your storage account or an external SSH server. See Full app backups for setup, schedules, recovery keys and restore testing.
