Edit environment variables

Open the app’s Variables section. Environment variables are app-specific; use the application’s documentation to confirm their names and accepted values.

Make a change

  1. Record the previous value securely so you can undo the change.
  2. Edit an existing variable, or enter a new key and value and choose Add.
  3. Review all pending edits.
  4. Choose Save changes and wait for the app to restart.
  5. Open the app and check its logs.

Adding a row is not the same as saving it. A blank value sets a variable to an empty string; removing the variable is a separate action. These can mean different things to an application.

Managed variables

Some fields are protected because they connect the app to a managed database or other service. Do not replace those settings with values copied from an unrelated Docker example.

Treat passwords, tokens and connection strings as secrets. Do not paste an entire environment listing into a public support post.

If the app stops starting

Read the first relevant configuration error, then undo the last change. Check spelling, URL format, required companion settings and whether the app expects a config file instead. Repeated redeployment will not fix an invalid variable that is still saved.
